Description
Carpet grass (scientific name: Axonopus compressus (Sw.) Beauv.) is a perennial herb of the family Gramineae and Carpet grass. Long creeping branches. The stalks are compressed, up to 60 cm high, the leaf sheaths are loose, compressed, the leaves are flat, the texture is soft, both sides are glabrous or pilose, racemes, arranged in a finger-like arrangement on the main axis; the spikelets are long and lanceolate Shape, the first glume is missing; the second glume is the same length as the first lemma or the second glume is slightly shorter; the first lemma is absent; the second lemma is leathery, the style base is separated, the stigma is pinnate, white.
Native to tropical America, introduced and cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is found in Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan of China; it was born in the wilderness and wet places by the roadside.
The creeping branches of this species spread rapidly. Each node takes root and new plants are drawn out. The plant body is spread on the ground into a carpet shape. Therefore, it is called carpet grass. It is a kind of grass for paving lawns. The soil-retaining plants; and because of its tender stalks and leaves, it is a high-quality pasture.
