Description
Miscanthus (scientific name: Miscanthus) is a collective name for various Miscanthus plants, containing about 15 to 20 species, belonging to the Gramineae family. Native to the subtropical and tropical regions of Africa and Asia.
One of the species, M. sinensis, grows into temperate Asia, including Japan and South Korea. Some tall Miscanthus plants, such as Chinese Miscanthus and Giant Miscanthus (M. giganteus), are considered to be a very promising energy crop and are used as energy crops to produce biofuels, mainly alcohol. There are also some miscanthus cultivated as ornamental plants. More are in the form of weeds, all living in the wild or around artificial facilities. The species is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, southeastern Tibet, Sichuan, southern Hunan, southern Jiangxi, southern Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan; India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines also through Malaysia.
