Description

Sambucus williamsii is a perennial deciduous elderberry shrub with strong adaptability, mainly distributed in northern and temperate regions of China. It grows into dense clumps naturally, with large pinnately compound leaves and clusters of small milky white flowers blooming in early summer. After flowering, bunches of purplish-black berries mature in autumn, which have certain medicinal application value after proper processing, meanwhile the fruit clusters also bring good ornamental effect in late growing season.
This elderberry shrub owns excellent cold resistance, which can safely pass the winter outdoors under minus 32℃ low temperature, and it also performs well in drought resistance, barren land adaptability and slight saline-alkali endurance. The developed root system can spread horizontally in a large range, effectively locking the loose soil on hillsides, reducing surface runoff and soil loss caused by rainwater washing. Seed-propagated seedlings grow fast with strong sprouting ability, easy to be trimmed into natural green barriers or ecological hedges. It is widely used in northern urban park greening, roadside shelterbelts, boundary isolation hedges, mountain barren land ecological restoration and slope water and soil conservation projects. It can adapt to slightly acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline loam soil, only low-lying waterlogged plots and heavy hardened clay soil need to be avoided to prevent root rot and stunted growth. Daily management is extremely simple, only need to ensure sufficient sunlight and timely drainage in rainy seasons, being a multi-purpose shrub integrating medicinal harvesting, flower and fruit viewing, as well as ecological protection.

Planting Instructions

  1. Soil Preparation
    Mix ordinary garden soil, coarse river sand and fully decomposed organic fertilizer evenly to make loose and breathable planting substrate. Neutral loam soil is the most suitable growing environment. Build raised seedbeds for sowing to guarantee smooth water drainage and avoid long-term soil water saturation. Compacted clay soil will hinder root breathing and slow down the growth speed of young seedlings.
  2. Seed Pre-treatment
    The seeds have deep physiological dormancy, so low-temperature wet sand stratification is a necessary step for normal germination. First completely remove the residual pulp on seed surface, screen out shriveled, insect-damaged and empty seeds by water floating method. Disinfect the qualified seeds briefly, then soak them in room-temperature clean water for 24 hours to fully absorb water. Mix the soaked seeds with wet river sand in a volume ratio of 1:3, store them in an environment of 2–5℃ for 90 days cold stratification. Turn the mixture of sand and seeds every two weeks to keep ventilation and appropriate humidity. Sow in early spring when seed coats crack and white radicles break through the outer layer. Direct outdoor sowing in autumn is an alternative method, which relies on natural low temperature in winter to automatically break seed dormancy.
  3. Sowing Method
    Carry out drill sowing on seedbeds, bury seeds 1cm deep in moist matrix, cover a thin layer of fine soil and gently compact the topsoil, water thoroughly once after sowing. Set up weak shading net in seedling stage to prevent tender leaves from being scorched by strong midday sunlight. When seedlings grow 4–5 pairs of true leaves, transplant them into nutrient bags for container cultivation, which greatly improves the survival rate of later field planting. The stable warming period in early spring is the optimal sowing time.
  4. Germination Condition
    Keep the matrix slightly moist without accumulated water, the optimal germination temperature is 15℃–25℃. Concentrated seedling emergence will be completed within 45–75 days after sowing. Cover breathable plastic film before germination for heat and moisture preservation, open the film regularly every day for ventilation to prevent seedling mildew and damping-off disease caused by high humidity environment.
  5. Daily Maintenance
    Watering frequency: Keep soil evenly moist in seedling stage, water once every 4–6 days in hot dry summer, once a week in spring and autumn. For mature shrubs, water once every 7–10 days under continuous drought weather; stop watering on rainy days and drain all ponding completely.
    Drought tolerance: Good drought resistance. After the root system is fully developed in the second year, adult plants can endure long-term seasonal drought with little supplementary irrigation.
    Pest and disease prevention: Common diseases include leaf spot disease and root rot induced by waterlogging; main pests are aphids, leaf-eating caterpillars and red spiders. Control methods: Reasonably control watering volume to ensure soil air permeability; prune overly dense inner branches to enhance air circulation inside the canopy; remove diseased leaves and dead branches in a timely manner and spray low-toxicity fungicides for fungal diseases, apply conventional safe pesticides to eliminate harmful pests.
Other management points: More than 6 hours of full sunlight every day is beneficial to robust plant growth, abundant flowering and fruit setting; insufficient light will lead to leggy branches and sparse fruit clusters. Trim crossed redundant branches and aging weak branches every year in dormant period to maintain compact bushy shape. Apply diluted balanced compound fertilizer once in early spring and once after leaf fall to enhance overall plant vigor.
