Description
Forage beet (scientific name: Beta vulgaris L. var.lutea DC.) is a variety of sugar beet in the Chenopodiaceae family and beet genus. A biennial herb with thick roots. In the second year of growth, the flower stems can reach a height of about 1 meter. The roots have clusters of leaves, with long stalks, oblong or ovoid, and the whole is wavy; the stem leaves are rhomboid or ovate, small, and the petiole is short. The panicles are large, the flowers are bisexual, and the cells are called bulbs in production. The seeds are horizontal, biconvex-shaped, leathery, reddish-brown, and shiny.
Forage beet is suitable for planting in the vast areas of northern China, and it is more cultivated in Gansu and Inner Mongolia. Forage beet is a low-temperature long-day crop, drought-tolerant and heat-resistant. It likes a cool climate with a large temperature difference between day and night, is sensitive to water reaction, does not require harsh soil conditions, and has strong salt-alkali tolerance.
Beetroot for feed is a good feed for pigs, cattle, sheep and other animals, and it has the advantages of large output and high economic benefits.
