Description

Full and plump Ilex corallina seeds have stable germination rate and strong seed vitality. Commonly named Coral Holly, it is an evergreen shrub or small arbor of the Aquifoliaceae family, native to mountain forests of Southwest and Central China. It features glossy leathery green leaves with shallow serrations, clusters of small yellow-green flowers in spring, and dense bright red oval fruits from September to October, which stay on branches for a long time with excellent winter ornamental effect.
This holly species has outstanding cold resistance, drought tolerance and barren soil adaptability, widely distributed in high-altitude mountain areas, suitable for slope ecological restoration, mountain afforestation, courtyard landscape tree configuration and evergreen hedge molding. Seedlings grow steadily, start blooming and fruiting normally after 4–5 years of cultivation. It prefers loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic loamy soil. Long-term waterlogged low land and heavy compact clay soil must be avoided to prevent root rot and seedling withering. Daily maintenance is easy, mainly keeping sufficient scattered sunlight or full sun, smooth drainage and seasonal topdressing, a practical multi-purpose native ornamental and ecological protection tree.

Planting Instructions

  1. Soil Preparation
Mix fertile humus soil, coarse river sand and decomposed organic fertilizer evenly to make loose breathable acidic substrate. Adopt slightly raised seedbeds for field sowing to drain rainwater quickly. Hardened alkaline clay soil is not suitable for seedling growth.
  2. Seed Pre-treatment
Ilex corallina seeds have deep physiological dormancy. Remove pulp from mature red fruits, clean thoroughly and air dry the surface. Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 24 hours, then carry out 90–120 days cold moist sand stratification under 2–5°C low temperature environment. Sow in early spring when seeds crack and show white radicles. Insufficient cold stratification will lead to extremely low and uneven germination.
  3. Sowing Method
Carry out strip sowing on seedbeds, bury seeds 1.5–2cm deep in moist substrate, cover thin fine sand on top and slightly compact the soil surface, water thoroughly once after sowing. After seedlings grow 4–6 true leaves, transplant them into nutrition bags for container cultivation to improve field transplant survival rate.
  4. Germination Condition
Keep substrate consistently slightly moist without standing water, optimal germination temperature 18–26℃. Concentrated seedling emergence will finish within 35–60 days after sowing. Cover breathable plastic film before germination for heat and moisture preservation, uncover the film partially for ventilation regularly to prevent seedling damping-off and mildew.
  5. Daily Maintenance
The plant tolerates full sun and partial shade; full sunlight can promote denser branches and more fruit setting. Water moderately in growing season, drain all accumulated rainwater completely in rainy seasons to avoid root rot. Trim overgrown branches regularly to shape hedges or single-trunk landscape trees. Apply diluted acidic compound fertilizer twice in spring and autumn every year to boost seedling growth and enhance cold resistance.

FAQ

Q1: Can coral holly survive cold northern winters?
A1: Yes, it has strong cold hardiness and can safely overwinter outdoors in most northern temperate regions.
Q2: Is long-term cold stratification necessary for seeds?
A2: Yes, it belongs to deep dormant holly seeds, 3–4 months low-temperature wet sand storage is essential for normal germination.
Q3: What is the key planting taboo?
A3: Long-term soil waterlogging causes root rot, alkaline soil will lead to poor growth and yellow leaves.
Q4: What are the main application scenarios?
A4: Mountain slope ecological protection, roadside evergreen hedges, courtyard fruit-viewing landscape trees.
Q5: Suitable for novice growers?
A5: Suitable for patient hobby growers. The core point is complete cold stratification before sowing, acidic well-drained soil and timely drainage management.
