Description

Full and plump Nageia nagi seeds keep stable germination rate and strong seed activity. Commonly called Nagi or Broadleaf Podocarpus, it is a subtropical evergreen arbor with high ornamental and economic value. It owns straight and smooth trunk, neat oval crown, thick leathery glossy dark green leaves with special fragrance when crushed, maintaining evergreen foliage all year round with excellent viewing effect.
This tree is a typical shade-tolerant species, can grow vigorously under forest canopy shade; it likes warm and humid climate, has certain drought resistance and barren soil tolerance, but weak cold resistance and cannot survive long-term frost and freezing weather. Its well-developed root system can fix hillside soil effectively to reduce soil erosion. Young saplings grow slowly, and mature trees can bear fruit steadily after 10 years of growth. It is widely applied for southern barren mountain ecological restoration, roadside street tree greening, park large landscape trees, courtyard shade trees and valuable timber base building. It adapts well to deep, loose, humus-rich slightly acidic sandy loam soil. Low-lying waterlogged land, heavy sticky clay and alkaline limestone soil must be avoided to prevent root rot and poor growth. Daily maintenance workload is low, mainly keeping scattered shade environment, smooth drainage in rainy seasons and regular thin fertilizer supplement, a multi-purpose tree integrating landscape appreciation, timber production and ecological protection.

Planting Instructions

  1. Soil Preparation
Mix humus leaf soil, fine river sand and decomposed organic fertilizer evenly to make loose breathable slightly acidic planting medium. Set up high-raised seedbeds for sowing to speed up rainwater drainage and avoid excessive soil humidity. Hardened alkaline clay soil is totally unsuitable for seedling raising.
  2. Seed Pre-treatment
Nageia nagi seeds only have slight physical dormancy without need for long cold sand stratification. First peel off fleshy outer aril, screen out sinking full healthy seeds and discard floating empty seeds. Disinfect seeds with diluted potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes, then soak in warm clean water for 24 hours to fully soften hard seed coat. Fresh harvested seeds sown immediately achieve the highest germination rate; long-time storage will sharply reduce seed vitality.
  3. Sowing Method
Carry out strip sowing on seedbeds, bury seeds 1.5–2cm deep in moist substrate, cover thin fine soil on surface and gently compact top layer, water thoroughly once after sowing. After seedlings grow several pairs of true leaves, transplant them into nutrition bags for container cultivation, which greatly improves the survival rate of later field transplanting. Seedling period needs sunshade net for partial shading to prevent strong sunlight burning young tender leaves.
  4. Germination Condition
Keep substrate slightly moist without standing water, optimal germination temperature ranges from 20℃ to 30℃. Concentrated seedling emergence will be finished within 20–45 days after sowing. Cover breathable plastic film before germination for heat and moisture retention, open the film intermittently for ventilation to prevent high humidity induced seedling damping-off disease.
  5. Daily Maintenance
Nageia nagi prefers partial shade environment; direct blazing sunlight in summer will cause leaf yellowing and growth stagnation, while proper scattered light ensures robust growth. Water moderately in hot dry summer, adopt "water after topsoil dries out" principle, drain all accumulated rainwater completely in continuous rainy days to avoid root rot. Trim messy weak branches appropriately in growing season to cultivate straight main trunk and compact tree crown. Apply diluted organic compound fertilizer twice in spring and autumn every year to accelerate sapling height and thickness growth.
Watering frequency: Water once every 3–5 days under sustained drought; reduce watering frequency in cool and humid seasons. The plant owns moderate drought tolerance after root system is fully established. Pests and diseases rarely occur in normal cultivation; occasional leaf spot under high humidity can be solved by timely removing diseased leaves and simple fungicide spraying.

FAQ

Q1: Can Nageia nagi survive cold northern outdoor winter?
A1: Cannot. It is a thermophilic subtropical tree, frost will lead to severe freeze injury or whole plant death, only suitable for planting in South China warm regions.
Q2: Does the seed need cold moist sand stratification treatment?
A2: Not required. Only outer peel removal, disinfection and warm water soaking can break seed coat dormancy effectively.
Q3: What are the two key planting taboos?
A3: Long-term soil waterlogging causing root rot, alkaline or heavy clay soil leading to stunted growth and leaf chlorosis.
Q4: What are the main application values of mature Nageia nagi trees?
A4: Straight trunk for high-grade furniture and craft timber, evergreen canopy for park and courtyard shade landscape, root system for hillside soil consolidation.
Q5: Is it suitable for novice growers?
A5: Suitable for beginners in suitable climate zones. The core points are fresh seed timely sowing, acidic well-drained seedbed and seedling stage partial shading management.
