Product Overview
Our premium Redtop Seeds, scientifically named Agrostis gigantea (synonym Agrostis alba), is a durable cool-season perennial rhizomatous sod-forming grass widely used for agricultural pasture, hay harvesting, slope erosion control and ecological land restoration projects. Redtop gets its common name from the distinctive reddish-purple pyramidal seed head during the flowering period, which is easy to identify in grassland vegetation. As a highly adaptable forage grass, redtop seeds can grow well in tough growing environments where most turf and pasture seeds fail to survive, making redtop seeds a cost-effective option for farmers, landscaping contractors and ecological engineering teams all over the world.

Outstanding Advantages of Redtop Seeds
-
Super Strong Soil Fixation & Erosion Resistance
Redtop grass grows extensive creeping rhizomes and dense fibrous root systems underground. After sowing redtop seeds on highway embankments, riverbanks, steep slopes and disturbed construction land, it can quickly form a compact sod layer to fix soil particles, effectively reduce rainwater runoff and prevent landslides. It is the preferred grass seed for slope stabilization and riparian buffer zone greening.
-
Excellent Adaptability to Various Soil Conditions
Redtop seeds can survive and grow in low-fertility barren land, heavy clay soil, waterlogged poorly drained land and strongly acidic soil with pH value as low as 4.5. It can withstand short-term seasonal flooding and slightly heavy metal contaminated soil, perfectly suitable for mine land reclamation, wasteland greening and degraded land vegetation reconstruction.
-
High Economic Value as Livestock Forage and Hay Grass
The grass blades grown from redtop seeds are soft and palatable for cattle, horses, sheep and goats. The grass can be directly used for grazing or cut and dried into high-quality hay. Mix sowing redtop seeds with clover or timothy grass can further improve forage nutrition and pasture utilization rate, which has been widely applied in large-scale pasture planting.
-
Strong Hardiness and Low Maintenance Cost
Redtop grass features outstanding cold resistance, fitting cool climate areas with high latitude and high altitude. After establishment from redtop seeds, it has strong self-renewal ability and requires little irrigation and fertilizer input, ideal for large-area low-management ecological greening projects. Besides, it can provide shelter and food for wild birds and small animals, improving local biodiversity.
Recommended Planting Guide for Redtop Seeds
1. Sowing Time
The best planting seasons are early spring from March to May and late autumn from August to October. Cool weather can promote even and stable germination of redtop seeds.
2. Seeding Rate
Pure single stand planting: 4–5 lbs per acre
Mixed pasture with other grass or legume: 1–2 lbs per acre
Emergency slope erosion control: 5–6 lbs per acre
Small courtyard lawn: 4–6 grams per square meter
3. Sowing Method & Depth
Redtop seeds are extremely small, only need a maximum 1/4 inch shallow soil covering. Level and finely rake the soil before broadcasting redtop seeds, then lightly roll the surface to ensure full contact between seeds and soil. Keep topsoil continuously moist in the first two weeks to raise germination rate. Redtop seeds need light to sprout, never bury seeds too deep.
4. Daily Management
Water frequently with small volume during seedling stage; mature plants have moderate drought tolerance. Remove weeds in the first growing season to avoid nutrient competition. Do not overgraze or excessively trim the grass, leave 4–6 inch stubble after mowing for fast regrowth.
