Product Description
Swida alba, also known as white dogwood, is a highly adaptable deciduous shrub widely used in northern landscaping and ecological restoration. The most distinctive feature is its bright red branches that stand out prominently in winter after leaf fall, bringing strong visual effects to the barren winter landscape. It blooms small white clustered flowers in late spring, followed by round white fruits in autumn, with dual viewing value of flowers, fruits and winter branches.
This shrub has extremely outstanding cold resistance, capable of stable outdoor overwintering under minus 35 degrees Celsius, and also performs well in drought resistance, barren soil tolerance and slight saline-alkali resistance. Its numerous shallow fibrous roots spread widely underground, which can effectively fix loose soil on hillsides, reduce rainwater scouring and prevent landslide and soil loss. Seedlings grown from seeds grow fast and have strong tillering ability, which can quickly form dense clumps for hedgerow shaping. It is largely applied to northern city roadside green belts, park winter scenery collocation, boundary hedges, highway slope protection and barren mountain afforestation projects. It can grow normally in slightly acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline loam soil, only waterlogged low-lying land and heavy compacted clay soil need to be avoided to prevent root rot. Daily maintenance cost is low, just keep full sunlight environment and drain accumulated water in rainy season in time. It is a multi-functional shrub integrating ornamental value, barrier isolation and ecological slope protection.

Planting Instructions

  1. Soil Preparation
    Mix ordinary garden soil, coarse river sand and decomposed organic fertilizer evenly to form loose and breathable planting medium. Neutral to slightly alkaline soil is the most suitable growth environment. Make raised seed beds for sowing to ensure smooth drainage and avoid long-term soil soaking. Hardened clay soil will slow down seedling growth speed and reduce overall vitality.
  2. Seed Pre-treatment
    Seeds have deep physiological dormancy, long-term low temperature wet sand stratification is essential. Remove residual fruit pulp completely first, pick out shriveled, damaged and empty seeds through water floating screening. Disinfect the qualified seeds slightly, then soak in normal temperature clean water for 24 hours for full water absorption. Mix seeds with wet river sand according to 1:3 volume ratio, place under 2-5 degrees Celsius environment for 90 days cold stratification, turn the sand and seed mixture every two weeks to guarantee ventilation and proper humidity. Sow in early spring when seed shells crack and radicles break out. Autumn outdoor direct sowing is an alternative way to complete dormancy breaking relying on natural winter low temperature.
  3. Sowing Method
    Adopt drill sowing on seed beds, bury seeds 1 centimeter deep in moist soil, cover a thin layer of fine soil and lightly compact the surface, water thoroughly once after sowing. Apply weak shading in seedling stage to avoid strong midday sun burning tender young leaves. When seedlings grow 4 to 5 pairs of true leaves, transplant into nutrition bags for container cultivation, greatly improving the survival rate of later field planting. Stable temperature rising period in early spring is the optimal sowing time.
  4. Germination Condition
    Keep the matrix slightly moist without standing water, the best germination temperature ranges from 15℃ to 25℃. Concentrated seedling emergence will finish within 40 to 70 days after sowing. Cover breathable plastic film before germination for heat and moisture preservation, open the film regularly for ventilation every day to avoid seedling mildew and damping-off disease caused by high humidity.
  5. Daily Maintenance
    Watering frequency: Keep soil evenly damp in seedling period, water once every 4-6 days in hot dry summer, once a week in spring and autumn. Mature shrubs water once every 7-10 days under continuous drought weather, stop watering in rainy days and drain all accumulated water completely.
    Drought tolerance: Good drought resistance. After the root system is fully developed in the second year, adult plants can withstand long-term seasonal drought with little supplementary watering.
    Pest and disease control: Common diseases include leaf spot and root rot caused by waterlogging; main pests include aphids, leaf-eating caterpillars and red spiders. Control measures: Reasonably control watering volume to ensure soil air permeability; prune overly dense inner branches to enhance internal air circulation of the canopy; remove diseased leaves and dead branches timely and spray low-toxicity fungicides for fungal diseases, use conventional safe pesticides to eliminate harmful pests.
Other management points: More than 6 hours full sunlight every day is conducive to vigorous branch growth and brighter winter branch color, insufficient light will lead to weak branches and poor ornamental effect. Trim redundant crossing branches and old weak branches every year in dormant period to maintain compact bushy shape. Apply diluted balanced compound fertilizer once in early spring and once after leaf falling to boost plant growth potential.
